I say often that the word relationship is the watermark of fundraising. It is under all that we say and do when it comes to fundraising. We can talk about all the practical aspects of the disciplines of fundraising, but you must be relational, act relational, and breathe relational to be an effective fundraiser. I am heartened by the fact that at the end of the day, through all of my work in the nonprofit sector, I have many rich friendships—the fruit of fundraising, strategizing and working together.
